What is a disc brake?
Disc brakes are the most common type of braking system on cars, and they’re also used in motorcycles, bicycles, trains and other vehicles. They use two pads that press against a rotating metal disc called a rotor to slow down the vehicle. Brake pads are made from high-friction materials while discs may be made from gray iron or ceramic depending on the performance needs of the vehicle.
The more braking force there is, the more heat created by friction between brake pad and rotor material; if this heat doesn’t dissipate properly, braking performance suffers and in extreme cases can cause fire from overheating brake fluid or even melting brake rotors!
But don’t worry – this is generally only an issue with race cars where stopping distances are measured in fractions of seconds rather than feet or meters like everyday driving requires!

Brakes should be replaced every 30,000 miles or two years to ensure safe driving and prevent accidents due to worn out parts. You don’t want to find yourself on the side of the road with no way to stop!

What is a drum brake?
Drum brakes are the most common type of brake used on older cars.
Drum brakes use a rotating metal drum to apply pressure against the brake shoes, which slows down your car. They’re less efficient than disc brakes and can be difficult to maintain.
If you have an old car with drum brakes, it’s time for an upgrade! Discs are more reliable and easier to service than drums. Plus they provide better stopping power in wet conditions because there is no contact between the shoe and drum when braking. You’ll also get better gas mileage because discs don’t drag like drums do when you let off the pedal or slow down gradually. And if that wasn’t enough, discs last longer too!
Why do brakes feel spongy?
If your brakes feel spongy, it could be because there is air, gas or water inside the hydraulic system. This can happen if you have a leak in the brake lines or if your master cylinder isn’t sealed properly.
That can cause all sorts of problems like boiling and vaporizing. Water causes corrosion that can ruin calipers and brake cylinders. That’s why it is wise to change your brake fluid periodically, every year or two.
Changing your brake fluid will not only get rid of spongy brakes but also prevent costly repairs down the line from corrosion caused by water in the system. Besides being an easy fix, these are 4 things that should be done regularly as part of routine maintenance on your car:
- Keep an eye on the level of brake fluid in your reservoir tank – it should be at least halfway full at all times
- Replace worn brake pads as needed – brake fluid levels will drop over time due to wear from use
- Check for leaks by looking under the vehicle near wheel wells or around calipers (the device that squeezes against the rotor)
- If there’s a leak, replace leaking components immediately; otherwise, they’ll continue leaking until they fail completely.
