What Does the Transmission Do?
The transmission in your vehicle is intricately designed to make sure the right amount of power and torque are supplied at different speeds. It’s like having a bicycle with multiple gears.
Low gear should be used when you’re starting from a stop because it will give your car the momentum that is needed to get going. It will be difficult to get the vehicle moving if you start from high gear.
The transmission uses an intricate process to reduce the higher engine speed in order to produce a lower wheel speed. The torque increases as well, which leads it into being one of mankind’s greatest inventions.
Signs It's Time for Porsche® Transmission Repair
There are many signs the transmission in your Porsche® needs to be repaired. Imagine if you were trying to ride a bicycle with the chain off. You would be unable to make any progress at all!
Transmissions are an integral part of your vehicle, and if it is failing, you will notice some serious difficulties when driving. Some signs that transmission might need to be serviced or repaired include:
- Struggling To Stay In Or Change Gear: It could mean that there is a leak in the transmission, or it’s broken. It might be the shifter cable, valve body of an automatic transmission system, something else inside…
- Delayed Or Missed Gears: If you’re hearing a grinding noise coming from the transmission, it may be an indication that fluid isn’t fully reaching all of your gears.
- Transmission Slipping Or High Engine Revs: This could also mean low transmission fluid or an under-performing engine. Other factors attributing to this noise may be a cracked exhaust manifold, worn-out mounts, and hoses, or even a heavily clogged air filter. You may be experiencing clutch wear or other transmission problems if your engine revs high.
- Leaking Transmission Fluid: Keep in mind that low transmission can cause a number of issues. If you’re noticing a puddle of red fluid underneath your car, this is usually an indication that the transmission fluid is leaking.
- Burning Smell: When the fluid is low, you may notice an unpleasant smell from your clutch. In some cases, this can cause it to burn and emit a burning odor.
- Odd Noises When Changing Gears: If your car is making a noise when the transmission changes gears, that’s an indication that there may have been damage to either bearings or parts in the gearbox assembly itself.
- No Power: If your vehicle is running smoothly, but has trouble generating power and getting up to speed- this could be because of a problem with the transmission. The computer might have limited your car’s horsepower because it detected that something was wrong with the engine and wanted to safeguard against any future accidents or malfunctions.
- Gears Grinding (Manual Transmission): A worn or broken shift synchronizer rings can cause the clutch not to release and may also affect shifting. If you notice that your gears are constantly grinding, it may be due to low transmission fluid. The most common cause of this is a bad seal on the pan gasket leaking.
- Clutch Pedal Grabs Very Low Or High (Manual Transmission): You’re probably experiencing a problem with the linkage or hydraulic system responsible for operating your clutch. You may need to get the clutch replaced. This will take some time and effort, but it’s worth doing for your safety.
Types of Transmissions
Manual Transmission
A manual transmission is like a bicycle’s gear shifter, with gears on the right side and brake levers on the left. When switching gears, the engine and transmission are disconnected just like a bicycle chain.
This is done by pushing the clutch pedal down. When you have shifted to the desired gear, hold your foot on it and release or disengage when ready for movement in a new gear!
Automatic Transmission
An automatic transmission is basically a computerized shifter that can shift gears with the push of a button, allowing you more time behind the wheel and less foot-pedal pushing. You want to shift gears as you climb in speed for the same reason. Just like a manual transmission, your engine will be more responsive and have less drag if its gearing is set appropriately.
This is due to the fact that low gear ratios are a trade-off. Low gears give more torque and power than high ones, but this comes at the cost of much slower acceleration rates.
Dual-Clutch Transmission
A dual-clutch transmission combines the advantages of both automatic and manual transmissions by using different clutches for odd and even gears. When a vehicle is shifting gears, the torque moves from one gear to another smoothly without any loss of power.
The driver also has the option to change gear manually using paddles on their steering wheel or take control of this functionality by choosing from a selection of automatic, standard, and sport manual modes.
Continuously Variable Transmission
The continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a type of automatic transmission that automatically senses the accelerator input with engine load and shifts to desired speed or torque gear ratio. This feature provides continuous uninterrupted power within a specified range of speed and torque ratios.
The CVT is an intelligent transmission that allows the driver or a computer to select between any speed, from 0-100mph in one-second increments. This will let you save money on gas. Keeping your engine running at a constant speed, rather than switching gears all the time is more efficient and can help lower fuel costs for drivers who only need to drive in traffic.
